After going down 13 to 1 to Madison in their opening game of the 12 and under tournament at Stuart Field on July 4, the Rappahannock AH Stars defeated Peachtree 15-3 on Friday.
Both games were stopped at the end of the fourth inning under the “slaughter” rule. “It kind of stops the bleeding,” one parent commented.
Brandon Holloway was the winning pitcher in the game with Peachtree. Chris Brown and Noah Starks served as relievers. Zack Ashby led the hitting with three doubles, a single and three RBIs. Noah Starks had a single and a double and four RBIs. Zack and Michael Fairbrother combined on a double play in the third inning which was one of the highlights of the defense.
The win set up a repeat match with Madison Saturday. Madison had been "sent down to the losers bracket by eventual tournament champion Greene.
Again Brandon started. He faced only seven batters in his two innings and had four strikeouts. In the bottom of the second inning the home team got a 2-0 lead on a double by Michael Fairbrother with two men on base.
Madison came back in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead with Noah Starks pitching. The Rappahannock all stars evened the score in the bottom of the third on hits by Zach Ashby and Mike O’Neil. They held the tie in the top of the fourth as Noah got his second strikeout.
Than in the bottom of the fourth Rappahannock again took the lead 4-3 when Chris Brown got a triple with Mike Fairbrother who had walked on first. That score held in the top of the fifth with Chris Brown pitching.
In the top of the sixth inning three Madison hits tied the score 4-4 as Chris Brown got his first strike out, but a walk and a hit with the bases loaded gave Madison the winning edge: 6-4. Although Brandon came back in to retire the side, Rappahannock was not able to courtter.
Madison went on Saturday to lose to Northwestern to set up the Sunday championship game between Green and Northwestern.
Meanwhile other age groups of Rappahannock All Star teams spent the weekend playing in tournaments elsewhere in the region.
