“If we’re going to preserve the records of Rappahannock County we must make improvements to the building,” he said.
In order to do that, the Society is planning a fundraiser set for August 8. It will be held at Mr. Baumgardner’s home near Washington, Va.
The mission of the Historical Society is to record the county’s history, preserve it and educate people about it.
The recent book “The Seasons of War”, which was critically well received, by Professor t)aniel Sutherland mentions the portrait of Rev. Barnett Grimsley. The actual portrait is housed here in the Historical Society building, as is the one of his wife.
There is also a portrait of Gideon Brown. These are significant works of art, said Mr. Baumgardner, and they must be protected.
The Society is looking for sponsors in order to raise the necessary funds it needs. A gold sponsor would be for a $500 donation; a silver sponsor, a $250 donation; a bronze sponsor, a $100 donation; and a community sponsor, a $50 donation.
Contributions may be mailed to the Rappahannock Historical Society, 328 Gay Street, P.O. Box 61, Washington, Va. 22747, or they may be delivered to the Historical Society building Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Society also has speakers featured at their monthly meetings. They hope to have Prof. Sutherland to speak at one of their future meetings and to have a program on the history of Shenandoah National Park.
“What would it be like, as individuals, to lose our memories? We would have trouble functioning — doing basic things to live productive lives,” said Mr. Baumgardner. “History is society’s collective memory. We can’t lose that.”
