Mr. Herd has substantial experience in planning for small towns, said Mr. Gooch. The committee will talk to Mr. Herd about long range plans for the town, and the public will be invited to that meeting. The date for the meeting will be announced once Mr. Herd has been reached to set up a date.
A letter opposing the expansion of town boundaries was received by the Futures Committee from Joseph B. Reid, who grew up in Washington. In part, the letter said, “The recent ongoing discussions on extending the town limits of Washington, Va. caught us by complete surprise. Such a change can only lead to a development of the scenic areas bordering the town and destroy the very beautiful features that make our Washington unique to us and to everyone who visits us.”
Elaine Viguerie asked if the committee would cease discussion on the boundary issue. Mayor Stew Willis said they will take it under consideration.
At last week’s meeting the budget for the year 1997/98 was approved by the Council.
