Representatives from Nature Works, Inc. of Alexandria presented a program explaining “Living Machine” to interested homeowners at the Washington Town Hall last Thursday night.
Mature Works is a company that provides sglutions for wastewater treatment.
According to the company, “A Living Machine is an effective and economical system for biological treatment of high strength industrial wastewater and sewage.” It is a natural way to purify water that can then be used for irrigation or to flush toilets. In a managed environment, in a greenhouse, light shelter or in the open air, organisms (bacteria, plants, snails and fish) break down and digest organic pollutants.
Dr. John Todd has been instrumental in developing the Living Machine. In connection with it, he has received numerous awards, including the Chrysler Award for Industrial Design in 1994 and the Environmental Merit Award from the U.S. EPA in 1996.
The company says that the advantages of the living machine, which can be used instead of a drainfield, are:
