Osteoporosis and recent evidence suggests calcium also plays an important role in the prevention of other chronic diseases such as hypertension and colon cancer.

Current calcium intake among adult men and women does not meet the Recommended Dietary Guideline level let alone the “optimal” level. More than half of men and women in the U.S. do not eat an adequate amount of calcium. After age 35 about three quarters of the women in the U.S. do not meet the guideline.

Calcium comes from several sources with milk foods being the most concentrated and the best utilized by the body. An 8 ounce glass of milk (regular, low fat or skim) contains 300 mg. An 8 ounce cup of yogurt contains about 350 mg. of calcium.
