He said he is adamant about hiring more coaches, having a track and an intramural program. That program could be a link between the elementary schools, with either 6th, 7th and 8th graders playing together on teams or 7th, 8th and 9th graders.
Mr. Tapper told the board that he spends over 130 nights a year working at the school past 9:30 p.m., and said they might want to start looking at a separate athletic director position.
Dr. Tole expressed his support of a girls’ soccer team, as he sees a significant level of interest in soccer for girls. Mr. Tupper said he also supports it, and hopes the schools can have all the teams they want Dr. Gangel said he felt the girls’ soccer teams should be given consideration, and the subject was tabled for further discussion.
Ron Makela said the board had just , gone through a budget cycle and already there are requestes. A long range plan would help the budgeting process, he said. Dennis wingfield sahe he felt the whole athletic program needed to be looked at realistically.
Literacy passport scores for the Rappahannock County public schools rose dramatically for 1997. The 1997 score was 79.5, compared to 47.3 for 1996. Other years’ scores were: 1990, 59.3; 1991,69.7; 1992,72.3; 1993,82.6; 1994, 73.6; 1995, 62.1. The state comparison is not yet known, said Dr. Gangel, but he guesses the schools here are in the top 10 percent.
