Histories of North American Swallows. There I found that much is not known of their behavior. Is there any wonder at this? Rough-winged Swallows are swift and difficult to follow; at the same time they nest in dark holes in the earth, or in the case of the Flint Hill birds, deep in a drain pipe set into a stone wall.
It was John James Audubon, who, on seeing the birds in October in Louisiana in 1819, realized that this swallow was different and was, indeed, unknown to science.. At the end of his description of the newly-discovered species, he wrote: “I leaned against a tree, and gazed on the Swallows, wishing that I could travel with such ease and rapidity as they and thus return to my family as they could to their winter quarters.” His wife, Lucy Bakewell Audubon, and their two sons were in Pennsylvania.
I also gazed at the swallows and admired their flight, only I was leaning against a stone wall instead of a tree. The handsome white house behind the swallows nest pipe has a ‘for sale sign in the yard. I don’t think the swallows are going to buy though they pay rent with all the gnats, mosquitoes and flies that they capture in swift flight.
Unlike Audubon, I didn’t want to be anywhere except right here in Flint Hill.
