Calcium supplements are often a source but often do not contain concentrated amounts. Also, the calcium is not easily used by the body.

Certain plant foods contain calcium but two or three servings are needed to get the same amount of calcium as one glass of milk and the oxalates and phytates in the plant interfere with the calcium absorption. Soy products such as tofu and soybeans as well as canned fish with bones have calcium.

To add up your daily calcium intake Virginia Cooperative Extension has a handout called the Calcium Checklist. There is also information about fats and reading labels on calcium rich foods. To receive your copy call your local Extension office today at 675-3619.
