After law school, he worked for a decade in private practice as a litigation attorney, mostly in his own firm.

In 1987, he ran successfully for commonwealth’s attorney of Henrico County. Four years later, when he decided he wanted to keep the position, no one opposed him. Two years after that, he became Virginia’s attorney general.

When he resigned from office in early June to run for governor, he left knowing that he also had made his mark on broad public policy.
