the state has many unmet needs, told me that when he encountered Beyer at a fundraiser the Democratic nominee told him he had to come up with a counter to the Gilmore plan because his tracking polls showed the Republican was making effective use of the issue.
The Democrat activist said Beyer at least implied in their brief conversation that pushing for tax relief would not be a high priority in his administration.
A few days later Gilmore issued a press release contending that Beyer in a private meeting with Richmond TimesDispatch reporters said essentially the same thing.
Don Beyer is a good campaigner, better than Gilmore, and a glib speaker. He hardly ever forgets a face or a name, a valuable asset, to politicians. He is a nice likable guy and has been very friendly toward me whenever we have met. My impression is that he is honest and hard working and likes people.
Having said all that, one wonders if Beyer has any real deeply rooted philosophical convictions about government or if the real Donald Beyer is a person who, like Bill Clinton, is prepared to turn himself into a political chameleon.
