Republican, I should point out that several of my remarks about the Gilmore narrowly focused campaign have resulted in some cutting remarks directed at me by GOP adherents who accuse me of not being loyal enough to the cause.
Sorry, I tell them, but having spent nearly 30 years as a political reporter who tried to approach the job with objectivity, blind partisanship just isn’t my thing. I believe Jim Gilmore is well-qualified to be governor and did an outstanding job as attorney general. I also believe the spin doctors have too much control over his campaign and that he, as well as Beyer, should address a broader range of issues.
Even so, the car tax bill I got that recent morning made me realize by Nov. 15 I am going to have to part with a sizeable chunk of money for a vehicle that cost sales tax when I bought it, that cost federal and state taxes each time I fill up with gas and that takes me to the store or mall where I pay sales taxes on everything I buy. I stand firmly with the majority of Virginians who indicate they do not like this tax a whit.
