Three species of sparrows visit our Flint Hill feeding tray. The White-throated Sparrow comes in small flocks to scratch for seed on the ground. This bird’s black and white head stripes and white throat are not as distinct and clear as they will be after the spring molt, just before the bird leaves for his New England breeding territory. This handsome sparrow only spends the non-breeding months in the Virginia Piedmont.
The five-inch Field Sparrow is the smallest of the three. With his russet cap, pink bill and gray cheek patches, he has a certain dainty quality that I find very appealing.
