Smiling faces and friendly greetings set the stage
for the New Year at the Board of Supervisors
meeting. Their decision this time last year to initiate the Sperryville Gateway Committee came to fruition when they approved the committee’s grant proposal Monday night. What began with Pete Estes and John McCarthy looking into federal grants turned out to be an enormously successful community effort in planning for the future, not just letting change happen.
The board’s decision on Monday to co-sponsor a scenic easement with the Virginia Outdoor Association for Dick McNear’s ridge top land is an example of a visionary resident and board working together. With pending legislation in the Virginia General Assembly, scenic easements might prove to be not only the best, but only way, to protect the county from development.
