The third sparrow, the Song Sparrow, has a heavily streaked breast. This bird delights me out of all proportion. I suspect my pleasure in seeing this bird with the streaked breast results from the fact that though the Song Sparrow is one of the most widely distributed species in North America, they did not nest in central North Carolina when my passion for birds was evolving.
On rare occasions we saw them in winter in company with other sparrows. Though this fine bird nests in both the mountains and coastal areas of North Carolina, it did not sing in my part of the state. After all these years, I am still making up for that deprivation.
Two dark streaks start at the base of the Song Sparrow’s bill and run down to where they gather into one bold spot in the middle of the bird’s breast. Other dark lines mark and define this bold, central spot.
