Coyotes are smaller than some people think, averaging only around 30 pounds in weight and standing two to three feet tall. They look similar to German Shepherds, with gray and brown fur, although about one in ten coyotes is black. Coyotes usually have black-tipped tails.
But there is really no fool-proof formula to tell the difference between a coyote and a wild dog.
“We have people thpt confuse the two of them all the time,” Lowney said.
