Her autobiography, “Research Is a Passion for Me,” was published in Canada and is difficult to find. The staff of the Rappahannock County Library got it for me through an interlibrary loan. Margaret Morse Nice was a wonderful woman and a great scientist. Her studies of the Song Sparrow went on for many years and during that time she moved a number of times with her college professor husband and raised three daughters.
The third unique quality of this little sparrow is implied in both its scientific and common names. Melospiza melodia is the Latin baggage carried around by this streak-breasted bird. Melo meaning “song” and -spiza is Greek for “finch.” The melo part is repeated in the specific name and, again, translates into “song.” In other words; “song finch.” The common name, Song Sparrow, is just a direct translation of the scientific name.
