rate and appropriate, for the song of this bird is remarkable for its complexity and persistence. It’s a combination of clear whistled notes, tinkles and buzzes that defies my ability to describe. I just know I love this singer and his song. He sings over and over as if full of himself and unable to get it all out and into the listening world.

Once many years ago I was driving through a Virginia spring with one of my seventhgrade students. We stopped for a moment as traffic was channeled into one lane. The rich and varied song of the Song Sparrow came from a shrub along the road.

“What do people think who hear that?” said my companion, who recognized the brown bird’s song. “I mean those who don’t know about birds.” “I fear they don’t even hear it,” I responded.

For a time my traveling companion was silent. Then, she commented, “They sure do miss a lot.”

They surely do for the song of this little sparrow is one of the purest delights of the world.
