Most of the coyote problems reported by farmers in this part of the country occur in West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley.
Oliver Brown, the professional huntsman of the Rappahannock Hunt, said that although his hunt friends elsewhere complain about coyotes depleting the fox population, he has never seen any coyotes.
“We have so many foxes around that that’s an indication that coyotes are not a problem,” Brown explained.
Coyotes aren’t like dogs. They don’t come up to people and lick their hands. Most coyotes are afraid of humans, and tend to avoid them. But not always.
“I was surprised to see him out in the middle of the day like that,” said Brad Isham, a Leesburg man who saw a coyote trotting around in the fields near Oasis Winery in Hume a few weeks ago.
“It wasn’t a typical coyote that you think of,” Isham said. “He was real big, looked real healthy. He had a heavy winter coat. He was beautiful.”
