General Lee s birthday celebration set

On Monday, Jan. 18 the McCormick Civil War Institute of Shenandoah University and Hardtack Tours, Inc. are proud to present an evening to commemorate the birthday of General Robert E. Lee.

This celebration will be held at Dean’s Steakhouse located in Front Royal, beginning with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. with period entertainment provided by the Tuscarora Civil War Brass Band. A sit down dinner, followed by a lecture given by historian Richard Lewis from Lexington, Va. on the Postwar Legacy of Robert E. Lee, will complete the evening.

The proceeds from this event will go to Lee’s Chapel on the Campus of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, the final resting-place of Robert E. Lee. This donation will be used for their flag restoration project. Call now reservations are limited 635-5078.

Karate classes to begin

Shorin-Ryu Okinawan karate classes will begin Jan. 20 at Ki Theatre in Washington. Classes will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for juniors and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for adults. Runners club to host event

On Saturday, Jan. 16 the Shenandoah Valley Runners Club will host the Mystery Distance Run at Powhatan School in Boyce. Runners and joggers from Rappahannock County are welcome to attend. The race will start at 9:30 a.m.; registration begins one hour earlier. Entry fees are $3 for SVR members, $4 for nonmembers and $1 for students. Call Chris Northup at 662-0302 for information.

Wakefield to host open house

Wakefield School in The Plains will host an admissions open house on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. The public and especially prospective students and their parents are invited.
