Mrs. Dixon’s camels are tame and gentle. Camels got their bad name from being mistreated, she says.
Driving her sports utility vehicle into one of her pastures recently, Mrs. Dixon attracted five dromedaries, or one-humped camels, to her side. One was an adorable baby with white front legs. While holding one camel’s halter, she said “Kush,” and he sank to his knees.
The camels extended their long lips and nibbled gently on clothing while waiting for their heads to be scratched. Their feet were soft and wide, unlike those of cattle and horses. Their heads swayed back and forth, up and down, as they looked over their visitors.
