The chickadees that visit our Flint Hill feeder scold me with a quick, dee-dee-dee when I go outside. I think it is a scold; it may just be the little bird’s welcoming call.
To attempt a simplification of the differences between the two species, I should first note that neither the Black-capped nor the Carolina is migratory though there may be some movement around in winter for food. That creates a problem for “Chickadee watchers” because the slightly larger (by only 1/4 inch) Black-capped often wanders down to lower altitudes in search of food in cold and snowy winter weather.
