Birds are accurate predictors of shifts in winter weather and are very sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. They know. At this writing, it is 8:30 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 2. A major winter storm is predicted for this day. So far, the birds have indicated no concern for the possible future loss of food that may be covered by snow and ice. If they do begin to flock in and squabble over food, I will look carefully at all Chickadees though they will certainly not stay long enough for me to catch a good look at throat feathers.
Apparently the vocal announcements of the two species keep them from interbreeding — hybridizing — when their ranges overlap. A Black-capped Chickadee knows he is not a Carolina Chickadee. In the long run, maybe that is what is truly important for the birds and me.
