The Black-capped Chickadee is a northern bird that inhabits suitable habitat at higher elevations in mountains of Virginia. There the plant life is the same as that of New England and Canada because nights are cooler. Climate determines plant life which, in turn, defines which birds will occur.
Besides a slight difference in size (which is of little use in identification) the Blackcapped has more white in its wings. A distinct variance occurs between the black on the throat and the soft gray of the breast feathers. With the Carolina Chickadee, the line is distinct; there is a clean line between the two colors. The black feathers on the throat of the Black-capped Chickadee tend to “bleed” down and mingle with the gray breast feathers.
