Under the direction of Francesco Rossi, this film condenses Primo Levi’s experiences following his release from Auschwitz into a series of picturesque vignettes. The drama focuses on Levi’s rediscovery of life, hope and dignity and the simultaneous awakening of a sense of moral outrage previously suppressed by the horror of his daily existence. • The late, Primo Levi, a well-known Italian writer and chemist wrote this account about his long trip home after the war. His journey took him through Poland, Russia, Rumania, Hungary, Austria and Germany before he finally reached his home in Italy. Actor John Turturro shows great sensitivity for his role as Levi, on one level utter hopelessness and on another level the absurdity of his situation.
This movie is highly recommended by Brian Fox of Swank Films in New York. Miramax Films introduced “The Truce” in the.summer of 1998 but distribution was poor so few people have had an opportunity to see it.
“The Truce” will be shown at The Theatre in Washington at 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15. (Rated R, 116 minutes, admission $5 and $3).
