Assembly. The General Assembly called for a salary rise of six percent, said Dr. Gangel, though that increase is “not based on the beginning of the contract year” and equates to an annual increase of 3.54 percent, compared to the three percent originally budgeted. On the revenue side, the “fine print” pertaining to “capital and debt service matches for the lottery money” has not yet been finalized, but Dr. Gangel expects more definitive answers from Richmond before this Thursday’s work session.
Other expenditure increases were related to the cost of extending the new teacher salary schedule and the teacher aide salary schedule to additional steps, to provide for health benefit coverage for two retires, and for the purchase of the first of three piano trucks, as requested at the February meeting by the choral boosters.
In other public comments Tom Junk lobbied for standard salary increases for all personnel categories (administration, teachers, and bus drivers) in lieu of the presently differentiated approach, and also advised the board to provide adequate funds for school roof repairs and to “go for it” instead of putting off such funding, regardless of the implications on taxes. John Weise of the band boosters offered privatelyraised funds for the purchase of instruments, and was prepared to offer a check in the amount of $1600 for this purpose.
Further revisions to the budget will be presented at Thursday’s work session, and that budget iteration will incorporate any additional information received as a result of General Assembly actions, as well as an appendix in which the cost of “wish list” capital and instructional items will be identified.
