He built the home he still lives in 45 years ago. And he owns one of the largest ranches in the county, El Rancho Grande, situated on 500 acres.
He breeds purebred Angus. Currently, he has roughly 90 cattle . . . and one buffalo.
The buffalo showed up two weeks ago on its own. His son, James Cannon, came in from being out on the ranch and said to his dad, “What are you doing with buffalo out there?!”
There are several buffalo ranches in our vicinity. Buffalo are raised primarily for their meat, which can be found in certain grocery stores and on menus at restaurants where buffalo burgers are sold.
Buffalo meat is slightly sweeter and gamier than beef. The closest buffalo ranch is located in Eggbornsville, Culpeper County, three miles “the way the crow flies” away. The ranch is owned by Mike Spensrud.
He owns roughly 35 buffalo. Recently, he had purchased some buffalo from a breeder in Manassas. Three of the buffaloes had not adjusted to their ' new surroundings in Eggbornsville and decided to roam.
