The bird watcher learns there is much more to feederwatching than identifying species. Courtship takes many forms of which singing is the most obvious.
Early in February, I watched as chickadees chased each other through the limbs of the maple tree in the side yard. Was this a male chasing another male out of his territory or was he indicating his intent to mate with a female? It is difficult to determine. The chickadees know, however, and that is what is important.
The female chickadee takes a more active role in courtship than a female Cardinal. This is true for all species where male and female are externally identical. Each has to recognize the other’s sexuality before the real business of pair bonding can begin.
