tax

A bill sponsored by Sen. Kevin Miller passed the General Assembly allowing the county to charge a 4 percent combined occupancy and meals tax for establishments that do not separate their bills. The new legislation will take effect July 1.

“Never has anyone worked so long for so little,” said McCarthy about Sen. Miller. He worked to have the bill passed and fought against the bed and breakfast lobby, which wanted 2 percent of the tax to go toward bed and breakfast advertising.

Voting machines

In a unanimous vote, the board approved purchase of a back-up voting machine for $6480. Since the county purchased identical machines within the past six months, a discount may be available, McCarthy said.

Joint meeting

During the evening meeting, the supervisors met with the Washington Town Council to hear public comment and vote on extending the town boundary around three lots divided by the town-county boundary line.
