Only resident, non-migratory species display courtship behavior at feeders. Birds such as Juncos and Whitethroated Sparrows will fly north to breed and perform courtship rituals at the place of nesting. Before flying south, they may practice singing a bit, but the full song, the most obvious and audible aspect of courtship, occurs after they have departed from wintering grounds.
Some species that stay mated throughout the year, such as the Carolina Wren and White-breasted Nuthatch, don’t have to go through the elaborate ritual of courtship. The bond of these birds as pairs is already established and a bit of extra attention by the male takes care of the situation. They can get right down to business of nest site selection and since they haven’t spent time establishing the pair bond, these birds have first choice of safe nest sites.
