A male Cardinal has no difficulty recognizing a female. At the turning of the year in December, the male often chased the female from the feeder if she moved in too close to his choice sunflower seeds. As winter edged toward spring, he not only tolerated her close proximity but cracked a sunflower and fed it to the lady. Later, he may begin to attack his reflection in a window; he perceives his image as another male intruding on his territory intent on stealing his mate.
Other species known to engage in courtship feeding are chickadees (after they have chased each other through the trees), titmice and bluebirds. Careful observers may come up with additions to this list.
