Rappahannock Sheriff's Office personnel have some “good leads” on the larceny of 250 hand-painted ceramic tiles stolen from the Inn at Little Washington.
The tiles, valued at between $5000 and $10,000, were reported stolen on Feb. 26. A total of 250 tiles, with a value of $5 to $50 apiece, were to be used in the renovation of a lavatory at the Inn.
“These are all one-of-a-kind, extremely rare tiles, said Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz.
Capt. Jeffrey Brown of the Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.
The forced entry of a residence behind a locked gate off Rt. 707 in the Slate Mills area was also reported. While the break-in was reported on Feb. 26, it could have occurred earlier, according to Sherertz. An inventory of possible missing items is being made.
“Anyone who was in the area and may have seen anything is encouraged to call us,” said Sherertz.
On Feb. 25, the Sheriff’s Office was called to the dumping facility off Rt. 522 at Huntly to investigate a strange find there.
A C&P Telephone booth, complete with telephone, had been left at the facility by an unknown person or persons.
Sherertz described the phone booth as an older model, with the telephone inside bearing a Maryland telephone number.
It has been moved to the Sheriff’s Office, and C&P Telephone has been informed of the discovery.
