Superintendent of Schools David Gangel spoke about last year’s Standards of Learning test scores as being a base year for the school.
The scores were changing the school’s mission, he said, with the present seventh graders having to pass the tests, including algebra and geometry, in order to graduate.
“I don’t think the public understands the profound changes,” he said. “We have much to do at the high school.”
In another matter, Gangel explained a change in school policy that would require nonresidents to pay tuition, the only exception being children of employees who were hired before Jan. 1. Even nonresidents who own property in the county will be required to pay tuition.
The school census began March 1 and will continue until July 16, said Director of Pupil Personnel Helen Williams.
Williams is in charge Collecting names, addresses and birth dates of all school age children. The state wanted the number of children in the county, including private school children and homeschoolers in order to apportion the sales tax to the counties,
