The Commonwealth Transportation Board this week gave final approval for a $200,000 federal grant for the Sperryville Gateway Project in Rappahannock County, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
The grant is through the Federal Transportation Equity Act of 21st Century (TEA-21) program which promotes unique and innovative projects, using federal funds.
The Sperryville project will provide streetscaping along Main Street, including construction of underground utilities, pedestrian pathways and crosswalks, signage, parking, landscaping and a footbridge over the Thornton River.
The Sperryville grant was one of the 97 projects for a total of $18.5 million statewide that the board approved, including seven projects worth $1.8 million in the Culpeper District of VDOT.
The Culpeper District of VDOT serves the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock. With nearly 700 employees, the district is responsible for 70 miles of interstate, 730 miles of primary roadways, and 3,755 miles of secondary roads.
