Sunday morning and is still hurling his song into the air when we leave at 4 p.m.
Though I can hear the singer clearly from our stall, I often step outside to watch the Mockingbird and assure myself that he is more than a versatile outpouring of sound.
I have wondered who else hears this bird besides Lee Trott and myself. I know that the market manager, Michael Barreda of Purcellville, hears and enjoys the Mockingbird’s performance. We have compared notes on his mimicry. Sally Mello, who sells shiitake mushrooms from her Rixeyville Farm, also hears him. As to the other vendors and the visitors, I don’t know. It’s possible the Mockingbird medley is just a part of the sound of summer along with the traffic from Interstate 66 and the hum of conversation.
