Carlsons opened for business.
The dream was going well, until June of ‘95.
Mrs. Carlson says, “The dream became a nightmare.”
It was the summer of Mr. Carlson’s 60th birthday when he was struck by a car while crossing Independence Avenue in D.C. He was hospitalized for four months and they shut the B&B down for the summer.
Mrs. Carlson remembers, “He didn’t get home until Thanksgiving. But thanks to a remarkable recovery and marvelous therapy, he can walk again. Then we had the worst winter. I had to shut down again. I felt like Olivia Walton, except I didn’t have all those kids to help. That’s when we decided that people shouldn’t work so hard. Every summer since, we have closed down and taken a vacation.”
But when they are not vacationing, Mrs. Carlson tries to keep the B&B open seven days a week. The rates are $95-$ 125 for double occupancy. To get to Blue Knoll, follow U.S. 211 to Ben Venue (15 miles from Warrenton), turn left on 729 for two miles, turn right on 676/Gore Road just after Thornton River Bridge (pavement ends 500 feet), take second gravel road on right, 1/2 mile to end.
