“I had to be the good little Navy wife. I would throw little parties for 75 or 100 people. We moved to England, and the second day we were there, a family from Connecticut came through and I was cooking dinner for seven. I can remember throwing parties the day before the moving van was coming.”
And Mrs. Carlson adds, “Working in politics, I learned to chat with people quite easily.”
With all this experience, she knew she could run a B&B.
The Carlsons purchased Blue Knoll from the Cartwright Browns who own the Conyers House, another B&B. The building is pre-Civil War and was originally a one over one (or a two room house). Over the years, there have been additions. The B&B has four guest rooms, all with private baths (one with a Jacuzzi tub and one with a fireplace). Three of the rooms have queen beds and one has a king.
Mrs. Carlson says, “It was a B&B two and a half years prior to our arrival. Before that it was a private home. At one time, an architect had it and did a lot of the bath renovations.”
She put everything together quickly. She describes the decor as “eclectic, Country-Victorian.” They had a lot of furniture already. Mr. Carlson modified some of their antique beds in order to hold queen mattresses. And just three short weeks after they moved in, the
