une point 1 neara me clear penetrating whistle of a Bobwhite. For a moment I thought Mimus had added this call to his repertory. But no, that affirmation of summer was coming from the meadow many yards below the Mockingbird’s perch.
A Song Sparrow also sings from the tangle of honeysuckle that grows among the grasses in the meadow. So far, I have not heard Mimus attempt this bird’s intricate combination, of tinkling notes and low buzzes.
While Mockingbird-watching, I saw Grackles chase a Crow that had no doubt been intent on egg-stealing. The big black bird dodged and slipped through the air in its attempt to escape his persistent attackers.
The Mockingbird seemed to ignore these battles for he sang on and on. He was aware though, I am sure. Should a Crow or Grackle indicate a taste for Mockingbird eggs or young, t.hp sincrpr wnnlrl attaplr
