The Rappahannock County School Board received copies of a "Code of Responsible Student Dress" for the high school and a "Code of Student Conduct" for the elementary school. These regulations were developed by the respective school administrations, with some input from faculty, parents and students, and are in place and effective for the new school year.
The high school dress code seeks to help "create and ensure a healthy, safe, and effective learning environment . . . promotes a school atmosphere of respect, civility, pride, selfesteem and cohesiveness, reinforces community values and positive respect for authority and discipline, and assists in readying students for employment. ...”
The code dictates that students wear shoes and "clothing that conceals the chest, midriff, and back," establishes a minimum length for shorts, skirts and dresses, and prohibits clothing such as halter tops, "shirts with excessive arm openings," "bare midriff outfits," and "hat/head coverings." It also forbids clothing or jewelry that displays sexual content, prejudice or offensive content, vulgar language, and substances including alcoholic beverages, tobacco and illegal substances. If there is a violation of the dress code, the offending student will have the option of changing clothes or wearing school-provided clothing.
The elementary school "Code of Student Conduct" was effected to "state the behavioral expectations that we believe help to create a safe, productive learning environment and the consequences for violating those expectations."
