Much of her work is autobiographical, and more familiar and intimate for that reason. Rice does work on commissions as well—her career, in fact, began at age 16 when she was retained to paint a portrait of a family's pet. She continues now to combine conventional portraiture with her unconventional use of relevant found objects to create mixed-media portraits.
A walk to the bam next door to see Rice's "recycologically-sound" line of clothing left me speechless. Originally conceived by Rice and Julie Coon, the application of "recycology" to clothing has resulted in a line of often whimsical and always unique women's wear that must be seen, purchased and worn. Tee shirts, sweaters, skirts and other second-hand garments get the Rice treatment and become wearable objets d art.
