The streets of Washington were crowded with thousands of people enjoying the Fourth of July, and although there was "the usual mayhem" as far as traffic and parking were concerned, there were no serious problems, according to Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz. r In order to deal with the expected crowd, plans were in place to control traffic movement and keep visitors' safe and happy. Generally speaking, the organizers had a good plan — as long as the visitors paid attention to the signs directing them where to go, and obeyed them.
