What does an old building represent? What thoughts percolate through your mind as you gaze upon a rustic, crumbling part of the landscape?
Wherever men live, history pervades the landscape. Both we who live here and all those who drive through as tourists have a certain relationship with that past, that history that is inset within the landscape.
A part of why we, this corner of Virginia is thought of as beautiful is the natural landscape, the ancient sculpting of rock and stream into shapes of beauty and grandeur, adorned with an abundance of flora and fauna, lichens on rocks, fox, bear, wild turkey and so on. Many people visit for that alone.
Intertwined inextricably and mysteriously with the eternal geological backdrop are the remnants of the old and artifacts of the new folk living and working in this Virginia hillside. These have a beauty of their very own.
Its as though there has been a coarsening of everything with progress, so that even mundane, utilitarian artifacts, ravaged by timeplowshares, sheds, barns, old log houses- seem to exude elegance, grace and beauty when you contrast them with todays equivalents. It is joyful to simply go about and look at these crumbling artifacts of a different time.
