• The Talented Mr. Ripley: 1999, R, 139 minutes, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Billed as a "riveting thriller”, (Herb fell asleep), this film explores the depths to which a real nobody will go to become a "fake somebody".
Matt Damon (Tom) is the good for nothing scoundrel hired by a rich American father to retrieve his playboy son (Dickie) from his profligate existence in Europe. Paltrow is the equally rich and pampered girlfriend and the movie includes many scenes of idle lounging, boating, partying and spending.
Philip Seymour Hoffman has one of the great lines of the movie when he says to Tom: "You live in Italy, you eat Dickie's food, wear Dickie's clothes and his father pays you. Let me know if you lose your job!" It's a little difficult for us ordinary folk to sympathize with the idle rich, so we didn't find this movie as "riveting" as it was described.
