The bus halts and everyone disembarks, organizing for the parade, pretending its not hot.
Senator Robb and the local Democrats are sandwiched between the D.A.R.E. police vehicle and a miniature carriage drawn by a miniature pony. Right beyond the carriage is the band. Once ready to go, most marchers have little to do until the parade begins besides wish it was cooler. The drum band whiles the time away with a fairly smoking impromptu group jam.
The parade begins, moving slowly up into town. At first this cluster of police, democrats, donkeys, small ponies and musicians passes only greenery.
Is it a parade yet if there are no spectators? One young fellow from the high school band runs up and tells the Senator we need more money for the schools in Rappahannock.
Another student, perhaps a sophomore, shouted - "Hey, I voted for you", causing one to pause, wondering what exactly he might mean.
The spectators appear, and the parading is begun in earnest. Line upon line of families and friends looking on, waiting for the drums to pass by.
People in the crowd recognize people in the parade and wave and say hi.
