This film was nominated for a Cannes Film Festival award, and is definitely in the "arty" category. A period piece with beautiful costumes, the film focuses on the backstage events of an eccentric theater company.
Christopher Walken- is fabulous as a lascivious, homosexual theater critic, Susan Sarandon equally as good as an aging, pompous prima donna. There is lots of backstage intrigue, sexual maneuverings and unforeseen events.
In some respects, the film reminded Naomi of a Midsummer Night's Dream, in which the characters were all seduced into loving others for the night, but end up with their real partners. Not knowing Italian, "Illuminata" to us meant seeing the light, and
