revolutionary in the late Sixties, but the mountains took his angst and the keyboard became his weapon. "The first time I came out here," he said, "we drove down a one lane road—on one side was a river full of naked girls, and on the other side was a view of Old Rag Mountain. The farmhouse we were staying at had been abandoned, and the whole farm rented for $65 a month. Three hundred hippies came here by the early Seventies—and most of 'em stayed."
Warren Phinny came from San Francisco with the Timberline Flyers—they soon left, but he stayed and played. Linda Orfila came from South America via DC that same year to share her amazing voice. Julie Coon showed from San Francisco via Atlantic City to join the mix and to create a major annual party event, "Scrabble Rabble," with husband Howard.
Muthersbaugh brother Scott came to join Barry, Bill Abernathy, Steve Pratt, and Terry Lee Waggener with the OK's. Scottish rocker and sound engineer Smiggy Smith found himself in the midst of all this and with the OK's after touring with Austalian band, the Dingos, and working sound for Elliot Mazur and Robin Trower.
Smiggy recalled his move to the County: "I met the OK's at the Hideaway in Front Royal, when they came and played—those guys were raunchy and rough. They invited me to Rappahannock and to play with them. We played at a party, on a deck, in the middle of woods and with all kinds of people dancing around and having a great time. That's what I became a musician for .. . not playing in a studio, but in a place like this with people who were just looking for fun. That's what music is all about."
People came and people went. Bands formed and played out for awhile, cut a disk, or just regrouped under some other name. A few new faces, a new dynamic, and then off again to the hills.

You could rent the Washington (Virginia) community center for twenty bucks and draw hundreds of the hip at two or three bucks a head. You could get a contact high in there that'd last for a week.
