On Saturday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m., the internationally acclaimed Shenandoah Shakespeare Express brings its fresh, funny and energetic production of Twelfth Night to the stage at Rappahannock County High School. The return engagement of this exciting ensemble of players is offered through the joint efforts of RAAC (The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community) and the Rappahannock Curriculum Enrichment Committee.
If you think Shakespeare might be a little dull, think again. Shenandoah Shakes-peare Express (SSE) has been described as theater that rocks" (Charlottesville Daily Progress), as "uncommonly understandable” (The Philadelphia Inquirer), and as "shamelessly entertaining" (The Washington Post). According to The Boston Globe,' "Shenan-doah's Shakespeare is, simply, fresh, fine theater. Its combination of intelligence, spirit and sheer kinetic energy is profoundly exciting. This is pure Shakespeare, richly alive.”
SSE aims to present Shakespeare the way the shows would have been performed in his day, while making the reference points - costumes, music and such - as modem for today s audiences as the originals were in Shakespeare's time. SSE performs with house lights on, meaning that, like Shakes-peare's actors, SSE actors can see and engage with their audience.
As in Shakespeare's theater, actors double roles, sets are minimal, and costumes are used just, enough to show the audience who's who and what's up. The Express focuses on the language, the lines and the intent of the play. Each show runs about two hours, with each scene moving rapidly into the other, since all of the performers are on stage nearly all of the time and there are no cumbersome sets.
