In a surprise move, Supervisor Bryant Lee of the Hampton District nominated Alvin Henry to the Planning Commission, in lieu of proposing that Susan Babcock be reappointed to a second term The announcement was foreshadowed only by a brief note regarding the expiration of Ms. Babcock s term in the January Board of Supervisors agenda, and then by public comments in support of her reappoint-; ment.
Meredith Gorfein was the first to: speak, and said that she spoke both as a Hampton District resident and on behalf of the Rappahannock Democratic Committee in support oC Susan Babcock's reappointment. Mrs. Gorfein said that she did not know Ms. Babcock’s politics, but thatshe and the committee were favor-’ able impressed by her abilities in environmental and conservation, planning issues, and she urged the Board of Supervisors to reappoint her.
Phil Irwin, Rick Kohler and Jim Gannon, President of the Rappahannock League for-" Environmental Protection, also spoke in support of Ms. Babcock's reappointment. Mr. Gannon commented, "... she is willing to be appointed, ready to be appointed, and it would be a shame if she is not."
The Supervisors disagreed however, unanimously favoring Mr. Lee's nomination of Alvin Henry.
