Especially helpful are the very fli^fly and soft body feathers known as down. These feathers provide super fnsulation, much like the goose down we use fn down coats.
At night, birds can slow down the rate at which their body consumes energy and body temperature to conserve energy. During very cold nights, small birds such as chickadees and nuthatches may find a tree cavity or birdhouse where they can spend the night, huddled together with several other birds of the same species. *•
Several birds roosting together permits the birds to share body heat. I have a bluebird house that was used as a nesting site this summer and is now used by 6-8 bluebirds as a roost on cold nights.
There have been reports of as many as 20 chickadees sharing a single tree cavity. Some birds are not adapted to survive cold winter weather. These species are known as migrants, since they must migrate in response to changes in weather.
