We all talk about the weather. Either it is too dry or too wet, too hot or too cold. We surely are getting our share of cold weather, with night temperatures in the teens. We have had 43 days of below average temperatures for November and December. The creeks are completely frozen over in places.
My grandfather had an ice f>dnd when he lived in what is now the Shenandoah National Park. The movement of water in a pond is very slow and allows the water to freeze faster and more solid than moving water.
Every winter when the pond was frozen, he would use an ice saw and cut the ice into blocks the size they were able to handle. They would load the r blocks of ice onto a horse' glrawn wagon and haul it to the ice house.
The ice house was a round hole in the ground covered with what we would classify as ap A-frame roof touching the ground on each side. There was an outside door with a ladder or steps that went down into the ice house. With each load of ice he would make a layer of ice then pack sawdust on and around and over it. This procedure would continue until all the ice was covered. The underground temperature is 54 degrees and with the ice packed in sawdust it would last well into the summer.
