When Mr. Rufus Williams of Chester Gap went to the spring for water on Jan. 27, he found a garter snake lying in the snow near the spring. After he killed the snake he measured it. It was 30 inches in length and about an inch in diameter. . The first mid-winter conference of the 4-H All-Star Organization and IFYE delegates was held Jan. 28 and 29 at the Natural Bridge Hotel. All Stars from Rappahannock who attended the conference were Jean Lillard, Judy Lillard, Anna Ruth Barnette, Jack Sisk, Glen Updike and Randall Updike. Rappahannock County School Board has been allocated $17,624 in State funds to help pay the operating cost of pupil transportation for the 1960-61 school year, the State Department of Education reported recently. The allocation is based on the number of pupils transported in average daily attendance, miles pupils are transported to and from public schools and the number of buses in daily use meeting all requirements of the State Board of Education and State law.

At a special meeting called Jan. 22, the Rappahannock School Board announced the appointment of Robert Slade Estabrook to be the new superintendent of the county's public schools, effective July 1, 1981. The five member board voted unanimously to hire Estabrook for a four year term at an annual salary of $31,000. In a lead photo, Holly Moffett, a Girl Scout from Troop 909 shares a cookie with her sister Melanie. Girl Scouts from the area join those of the nation in the annual cookie sale.
